It happens when buried timber is slowly replaced by silica, so the tree keeps its shape while turning into rock, and every piece is a different tree with a different chemistry and a different set of patterns. Stand it up on a shelf or leave it on a desk where you can pick it up. This fossil specimen measures approximately 5.2 inches wide.
